Erector Sets

Few people realize that the erector set has been a staple of children's development for over 90 years. Developed by A. C. Gilbert in 1913, many generations have benefited from the realistic building components and open-ended play that is encouraged by erector sets. In recent years the Erector brand has refreshed the erector set principle with dozens of innovative kits that allow children (and adults) to create classics like the ferris wheel to cool new designs like a motorcycle, a roadster, crane, and skyscrapers like the Empire State Building. With a wide range of prices and skill levels, there's an erector set for everyone!

The Erector Set was invented by A.C. Gilbert in 1911, and was manufactured by the A. C. Gilbert Company at the Erector Square factory in New Haven, Connecticut, from 1913 until its bankruptcy in 1967. The Gabriel company of Lancaster, PA bought the Erector name, and continued to make nearly-identical sets into the 1970s and 1980s.

The Erector Set is said to have been the subject of the first national advertising campaign in America for a toy. Its great success made it part of American folk culture and continues to be a staple among children's toys despite competition from molded plastic construction toys, electronics, and other more "modern" toys.
